Sonny Rollins (born September 7, 1930, New York City, New York, USA) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist, widely recognized as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians. He has worked with greats such as Miles Davis, Art Taylor, J.J. Johnson, Bud Powell, and Thelonious Monk. He was a recipient of the prestigious Polar Music Prize in May, 2007. In March 2011 he received the National Medal Of Arts from President Barack Obama.
Sonny J is the stage name of English turntablist and singer-songwriter Sonnington James III, from Liverpool.
His debut single, "Can't Stop Moving", was brought out by Stateside Records in 2007. His second and third singles, "Enfant Terrible" and "Handsfree (If You Hold My Hand)" respectively, were released on 9 June 2008, followed by his debut album Disastro the week after, on 16 June.
Sonny J was propelled into the mainstream music scene when a fan published a viral video, featuring the The Jackson 5, on several well-known websites, before a demo version of "Can't Stop Moving" was played on BBC Radio 1. In September 2008 the song was re-issued with a remix by Mirwais Ahmadzaï, which gave Sonny J his first Top 75 hit when it peaked at number 40 in the UK Singles Chart. He is currently a member of the band Groundhog.
