English alternative rock group, active from 1983 to 1988. The original line up of the group had Paul Heaton, Stan Cullimore, Ted Key & Hugh Whitaker. Ted Key was replaced by Norman Cook after the band's first single. Hugh Whitaker was replaced by the ex-Velvetones drummer David Hemingway in 1987. Norman Cook and Paul Heaton went on to form Beats International and The Beautiful South respectively, after the demise of the group.
The Housemartins were an English alternative rock band formed in Hull who were active in the 1980s. Many of the Housemartins' lyrics were a mixture of Marxist politics and Christianity, reflecting singer Paul Heaton's beliefs at the time (the back cover of London 0 Hull 4 contained the message, "Take Jesus – Take Marx – Take Hope").
