AdevaRespectThe Greatest Dance
House music singer Born in 1960 in Patterson, New Jersey, U.S. She started her career in 1988 and she found success in U.K., signed to EMI's subsidiary Cooltempo with her debut album that included her smash cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" and the singles "Warning!" and "Thank You" (all three singles reached No.17 in the U.K. chart!) produced by house music collective Smack. She collaborated with Paul Simpson for the hit "Musical Freedom" that sampled Toney Lee's "Reach Up". She duetted with Monie Love for the hip house smash "Ring My Bell" in 1990. On her second album she was produced by Smack with guest production stints by Blaze and Frankie Knuckles, included in it, her cover of " It Should Have Been Me" (a hit for Gladys Knight And The Pips in 1968 and for Yvonne Fair in 1976) and in 1995 she guested on the latter's album "Welcome To The Real World". She made a not successful comeback in 1997 with a third and last album that included her rendition of Inner Life's "Caught Up In A One Night Love Affair". In 2000 she contributed to Prince's tribute album "A Tribute To Prince", covering his classic "1999" and in 2004 she guested to Slippery People's "Wish I Never Knew".
House/R&B vocalist Adeva is known for her commanding diva vamps, but she also has a strong feeling for songs closer to gospel ballads. Born in New Jersey, Adeva first gained fame in Australia and Europe; her first three singles ("Respect," "Warning," and "I Thank You") all peaked at number 17 in the British charts during the first ten months of 1989. A collaboration with U.S. producer Paul Simpson in March of that year also yielded a number 22 hit in England. Her debut album Adeva! gained platinum and gold distinctions in Europe, and an American release did respectably, as did two subsequent albums, Love or Lust? and It Should Have Been. In 1995, dance heavyweight Frankie Knuckles selected her as featured vocalist on virtually all of his Welcome to the Real World album. Adeva's work after the Knuckles LP included a single with Hyper Go Go in 1996.
